Jouve embarks for Dakar for a trip of several months in Africa. It crosses French West Africa and goes up towards Niger, to discover Hoggar, the Targui country. He brings back from this trip, superb evocations of Tuareg, He will illustrate The Book of the Bush by René Maran, using the drawings made in the African countries crossed.
At the beginning of 1934, he left for Egypt. He works at the Cairo Zoo, visits Luxor, Aswan, Karnak, and the Valley of the Kings. Jouve ends his stay by showing the works produced in an important exhibition in Cairo.
